Lycamobile Announces Sponsorship of Imperial College’s Raincatcher Project
Education

Event description

Lycamobile, the world’s largest provider of low-cost international phone calls, is delighted to announce its support, along with Lyca’s Gnanam Foundation, of Imperial College’s Raincatcher project.

This year, we have joined forces with students from Imperial College to build life-saving rainwater harvesting systems in rural Tanzania. In mid-June, six engineering students from the college began working with local communities to provide clean water solutions to western Tanzania, whilst training the locals to teach others on how to maintain and build more systems.

While the designs for the project were created by the team in the UK, all materials used were sourced locally to benefit the local economy. Our donation contributed to the implementation of these designs and also allowed the team to educate the local community on creating long-term solutions to the problem.

Hasan Al-Fahran, Imperial College said “It has been a great pleasure working with Lycamobile this year. They have been very professional and kept in touch with us throughout the year, always being keen on the project and seeing how we’re doing, from the initial sponsorship stage all the way through to the summer when our team got sent to Tanzania. This is the first year we’ve worked with Lycamobile on this project and we hope it paves the way for a future relationship. On behalf of our whole team, thank you so much.”

Ageeve Baskarathas, Imperial College said “We are grateful to Lycamobile for donating to this cause. They have been a huge support and allowed us to take our work further. This year, we have trained 15 villagers on how to build their own household-size rainwater harvesting jars from local materials. In addition, our 40,000 L water tank is supporting a school that used to rely on leaking and contaminated tanks. Thanks to Lycamobile, we were also able to repair the old tanks!

Subaskaran Allirajah, Group Chairman of Lycamobile and founder of Lyca’s Gnanam Foundation said “At Lycamobile, we are dedicated to helping communities who are less fortunate than us. It is devastating to hear that 31,000 children die each year in Tanzania due to unsafe water. We are proud that the students at Imperial College have taken it upon themselves to build life-saving solutions to aid the country and our company will look to help in any way possible.”
